Stephen Barclay: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what comparison his Department has made between investment in High Speed 2 and investing the same amount in upgrading track gauges and associated works across the network in order to increase capacity. [167999]

Mr Simon Burns: The Department has considered, on several occasions, a range of high level alternative packages to HS2, most recently in the Atkins study 559W Written Answers 6 SEPTEMBER 2013 Written Answers 560W ’High SpeedRail Strategic Alternatives: UpdateFollowing consultation’ which is available on the Department’s website.

Alongside HS2, the Government is investing heavily in the conventional rail network. Network Rail will invest £37.5 billion in the UK’s rail infrastructure in Control Period 5 (2014-19).
